Chemists have made great strides in understanding how molecular structure influences the reactivity of molecular systems, and biolchemists have exploited chemical processes such as site-directed mutagenesis and polymerase chain reaction to probe biological systems. The aim of structural biology is to develop a molecular level understanding of these structure-function relationships. One of the aims of structural biology is to understand the structural changes introduced by chemical modifications as well as to determine how such changes alter the biology, thereby developing a more complete understanding of structure-function relationships.
